Construction Diary, Episode 2
Since January, the construction site has been up and running, and our crew has already uncovered many areas.
On the first floor, the walls of the former Volksbank offices have been removed to reconnect previously separated parts of the building – this is where the new home for our 1733 Restaurant is taking shape.
A look back in time: During World War II, the Rößler family was forced, with heavy hearts, to sell the Grand Hotel to the Volksbank. After the war, the building was divided: 73 rooms remained part of what would become the new city hotel, while the Volksbank occupied the rest. To this day, if you enter the banking hall and look up towards the back, you can still see the ornate stucco from the Grand Hotel era – a quiet witness to its former glory.
A view long hidden from sight
The First Floor – Reunited at Last!
This photo was taken from the historic staircase, facing Sophienstraße.
Have you ever wondered why there hasn’t been a view of the Sophien Boulevard from here – unlike the floors above?
The answer lies in the building’s history: after the war, this part of the property was allocated to the Volksbank. Today, the bank requires significantly less space – giving us the wonderful opportunity to reintegrate this important section of the hotel into our 1733 Restaurant.
Get ready to enjoy a stunning view when you book a window table in the future!
The restaurant will be accessed via the bar entrance on Sophienstraße – and of course, our hotel guests will have their own direct entrance from within the building.
Now a building site – soon a place for shared moments, laughter, and delight.
Isn’t it wonderful how much space we’ve gained?
It’s truly important to us that the new 1733 Restaurant feels generous and open.
We want to create a relaxed place where every guest feels welcome – a space to gather with friends and enjoy an unforgettable evening around a beautifully set table.
The air is filled with the scent of Levantine mezze. Food is shared, laughter rings out, stories are told – and life is simply savored.
Here, people from all over the world will come together – and leave with lasting memories of a very special kind of connection.
Authentic finds from a bygone era
Uncovering Hidden Treasures
As we opened up the suspended ceilings and wall paneling, we were met with some truly unexpected discoveries – a moment we had been eagerly anticipating!
Naturally, the historic elements will be preserved wherever possible. Sadly, some are too badly damaged and must be carefully covered again to ensure their protection. At first glance, that might seem like a loss – but in doing so, we’re safeguarding them for the future. At the same time, modern infrastructure must also find its place. It’s a delicate balancing act between preservation and functionality.
Can you imagine the excitement we felt as we began stripping the building back to its core?
It’s been a fascinating journey into the past – one we’re thoroughly enjoying. And we’re excited to take you along on this remarkable path of discovery.
